Movies, TV shows, books, and other forms of media have painted a rosy picture of how beautiful, romantic, and perfect it is to be dating someone that you dance with. Like with most other media portrayals, this one is not accurate or representative of real life either. Choosing to date someone from the dance community or enter into the dance community with a significant other is no easy task. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t date your dance partner or someone else that you know from your dance class, studio, or the community in general. It can be very fun and exciting, not to mention passionate and romantic, regardless of your dance ability. The dance floor sets the place for a real life soap opera that we’re all a part of, like it or not. I personally know DOZENS of couples from the dance community, observing from the sidelines, and being a treasure trove of other people’s secrets, I have plenty of knowledge and experience to share. Publication date. Media type, Print (Paperback & Hardback). Pages, pp. ISBN · · OCLC · Mao’s Last Dancer is a Memoir written by Chinese-Australian author Li Cunxin and first Cunxin’s American dancing guide and host family. He was very nice, and gave lots of helpful advice to Li.
It recounts his journey from a young, impoverished village boy destined to labor in the fields of China to a world-famous professional dancer. Li Cunxin is born into a poor family commune in a small rural village in Shandong Province, where he is destined to work in the fields as a labourer. At first overlooked but selected after a suggestion by his teacher during a school visit, Li seems bewildered by the gruff preliminary inspection screening at the provincial capital city of Qingdao.
Selected to travel to Beijing to audition for a place in Madame Mao ‘s Dance Academy, he is admitted to its ballet school after passing a series of physical tests. Seven years of arduous training follow. He struggles at the academy, failing to excel as he tries to cope with his homesickness. There is no freedom within the rigid schedule, where he must balance hours and hours of dance classes along with strenuous academic classes. He also campaigns to be part of the Communist youth party, surviving rigorous interviews; after he is let in, an additional portion of his time is given to meetings.
But Cunxin doesn’t mind; he has a calling now: serving glorious Communism. The arrival of a new teacher, this one less likely to shout, changes his grim outlook on dance. He puts more emphasis on having fun and on knowing strengths and weaknesses.

Not that I would say anything to the guy standing next to me getting ready to carry me across the stage. At age 13 I did not resemble the stereotypical ballerina by any means. I did have long legs, but I was nowhere near the lean lines that are so sought after in ballet dancers. I was not overweight, I was not even on the high end of my age group in terms of weight, yet everywhere I looked I saw thinner dancers getting the parts that I wanted.
My experience was by no means unique.
